The St. Francis Dam disaster was a major California catastrophe for California, but it;s significance and impact was worldwide. In its aftermath California's first dam safety agency was created, a model for the rest of the nation. Perhaps most importantly, it was acknowledged internationally that outside consultation -- especially geological consultation -- is essential in the design and construction of any dam.
As much of a mystery as why the dam failed are the reasons the tragedy is virtually unknown today. The St. Francis Dam Disaster poses serious questions about the writing of history itself and the dangers of forgetting. Our documentary will address these issues as it places this great national tragedy in its proper place in modern American history.
